Background: Taj Mahal was built in 1653 for an estimated cost of 32 million rupees (current 52.8 billion rupees). It was built as a proof of power as well as love. The project employed 20,000 artisans and more than 1000 elephants. They used a post and beam pulley system to raise stone blocks, pulled by animals. The translucent white marble was brought from Makrana, Rajasthan, the jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China.
